The Rocky View County Agricultural Service (RVC) is coordinating an upcoming farm and rural safety workshop later this month, with assistance from members of a Cochrane-based Rural Crime Watch Association and Detachment Cochrane RCMP.

The workshop, which will be held online March 16 from 6-8 p.m., will feature presentations from D’Arcy Boardman and Jared Serviss of the Cochrane Foothills Protective Association, and Cst. Nathan Moore of the Cochrane RCMP.

According to Matthew Chilakos, Agricultural Services Officer at RVC, the free workshop is aimed at rural homeowners who want to learn more about farm and acreage security issues and the tools available to better secure their property.

“We wanted to use the county’s local knowledge, so we found some really good sources of local information,” Chilakos said in an email.

He added that the webinar will include methods to increase security around acreages and farms, equipment that can be used for this purpose, and different strategies that owners can use to reduce the risk of theft and vandalism on their property.

“This [shows residents] how to best protect their property, how to best mitigate the risk of being victimized and understand the risks associated with rural life,” he said.

Some of the risks of living in a rural area include the potential for farm and maintenance equipment and fuel theft, which Chilakos says are the main concerns.

He added that grain and livestock theft was also a known issue that the webinar will address.

Finally, the workshop will discuss security methods, including building gates and fencing around one’s property, installing alarm systems and live cameras, as well as automated lights and fuel locks – and even the more traditional method of owning a dog to alert one of an intruder to their property.

Those interested in attending the webinar are encouraged to access the link through the county’s various social media platforms, as well as on their Farm Events Calendar at rockyview.ca.
