Organizing a bike safety event? Claim free bike helmets as part of NCDOT’s annual initiative

If you or someone you know is hosting some kind of bike safety event this year and would like to give away helmets, we encourage you to apply to receive free bike helmets as part of an initiative by the State.

Founded in 2007 and overseen by the Division of Integrated Mobility, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) states that its annual report Initiative on bicycle helmets distributed thousands of helmets to children across the state.

“While less than half of all children typically wear a helmet when riding a bike, it can reduce the risk of serious brain injury by nearly 90 percent,” the NCDOT said in a statement.

All requests must be submitted by 5 p.m. on February 4, 2022. Applicants can request 25, 50, 75, or 100 helmets, and winners will receive the helmets by April 29, 2022.

As part of the initiative, participants are encouraged to partner with government and non-government organizations, such as police departments, fire service community centers and others, to organize safety events at bike.
