Leafcloud, Amsterdam’s Sustainable Cloud Hosting Company, Joins NVIDIA’s AI Startup Program

By admin, 18 January, 2022

Amsterdam-based Leafcloud BV has joined NVIDIA Inception, a program designed to support startups advancing AI and data science. European cloud services are greener than their American counterparts such as Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud. Today’s announcement shows growing interest in greener cloud solutions as enterprises focus on cloud sustainability.

Leafcloud Green Cloud solution: what you need to know

leaf cloud is a Dutch startup that claims to offer a truly green cloud solution. The carbon-negative cloud solution is touted as a European, open and sustainable alternative to cloud services offered by major US-based tech giants. The pandemic-driven digital transformation has seen a number of companies turn to cloud architecture to deliver their services.

As cloud adoption grows, companies are increasingly looking at the carbon footprint of their cloud service providers. Leafcloud differs from AWS, Azure and Google Cloud by being European, hosted in the Netherlands and having data centers where at least 50% of the energy is reused.

Leafcloud is able to reuse the heat produced by its servers, making it up to ten times more energy efficient. NVIDIA Inception supports Leafcloud because of its ability to use this heat to replace fossil fuels at its host sites, resulting in reduced overall carbon emissions. Leafcloud says it uses energy twice – first to power its servers and then to replace the use of fossil fuels for heating.

This is possible thanks to its unique distributed architecture that places Leafcloud servers in locations such as apartment buildings, hotels, and other structures that require year-round heating. The heat generated by the servers is distributed to the local water and heating network. In other words, Leafservers replaces heat from sources such as natural gas with that generated by its servers.

Leafcloud is able to capture and supply approximately 85% of the heat generated by its servers to the heating system of Leaf sites. Every computer dissipates heat even when running quietly and by reusing the generated heat, Leafcloud has found an innovative use case for energy that was previously wasted in large data centers.

As tech companies embrace AI and machine learning, which run on the cloud and can be power-intensive, Leafcloud offers a solution that can reduce fossil fuel usage without any performance compromise. Leafcloud remains energy efficient without compromising standard cloud services such as compute and GPU, pay-as-you-go option, storage, networking, secure, scalable, reliable and programmable technology.

NVIDIA Inception Program: What It Is and How Will It Support Leafcloud

Creation of NVIDIA is a free program that helps startups scale faster by giving them access to cutting-edge technology developed by the IT giant. The program also helps startups connect with NVIDIA experts, venture capitalists, and co-marketing support to expand their business visibility.

The program is designed to support startups doing groundbreaking work in AI and data science. The program helps these AI-powered startups during critical stages of product development, prototyping, and deployment. NVIDIA Inception members have access to a personalized benefits package such as NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute credits, marketing support, and technical assistance.

The program will provide Leafcloud with the opportunity to collaborate with leading industry experts and other AI-focused organizations. Leafcloud already counts Milieudefensie, Enabl.ist, FeedbackFruits and others among its customers. With the support of NVIDIA Inception, the green cloud service provider will be able to expand its reach globally and establish itself as a viable alternative to the Amazons and Microsofts of this world.

Leafcloud Chief Commercial Officer Thatcher Peskens said, “Joining the NVIDIA Inception program was a no-brainer for us. The program aligns with our vision for the future of AI and machine learning. Additionally, NVIDIA’s reach is unmatched, allowing us to explore exciting new opportunities.
