IPS Hosts Free Immunization Clinic for Hoosier Children

The clinic will be held Wednesday, March 16, from 2:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Crispus Attucks High School, west of Indianapolis.

INDIANAPOLIS — More than a quarter of Hoosier children aren’t up to date on required vaccines, according to the Indiana Department of Health. A free clinic on Wednesday helps students get back on track.

MDWise, the Indiana Immunization Coalition, and Indianapolis Public Schools are hosting a “Back on Track” clinic at Crispus Attucks High School to allow children to update routine childhood immunizations that have been delayed or canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Measles, mumps, rubella, polio and HPV vaccines will be available, as well as flu shots and, for those ages 5 and up, COVID-19 shots and boosters.

Health experts say that after the pandemic, almost all doctor’s appointments were canceled, including injections for children.

“There’s been a very large decrease in vaccination pathways outside of COVID-19 vaccines, and I think the last time I checked, the 2021 report came back from IDOH, and they were showing a good decrease by 10%, especially the younger age group last year, so they’ve definitely come down,” said Megan Carlson, director of health services at IPS.

“The more people we can get vaccinated, the safer our community will be in the long run, and also to remind us that COVID is not gone,” Carlson said. “Even though we want it to go away, it’s not. We’re seeing spikes in other countries, and it looks like what’s happening in countries, we’re seeing it here in the United States soon. While I hope that’s not true, it’s important that we are vigilant and understand that this is not going away anytime soon, if at all.”

The clinic will be held March 16 from 2:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Crispus Attucks, which is located at 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King St. on the west side of Indianapolis.

The event is open to everyone and will include free school supplies and raffles every 30 minutes for $50 gift cards from MDwise. No insurance is required.

Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult with valid ID.

Parents and caregivers should register online at: patients.vaxcare.com/registration (enter registration code IN65942, then select “Crispus Attucks 3/16”).
