“For the past 65 years, in 1957, my grandfather founded this place,” said Eric Hood Sr., owner of Hood’s Tires.
The store is tucked away in postal code 48214; a section that is 46% below the national median income, reflecting a great need for resources in the community.
Eric Hood Sr. and his son, Eric Jr. say they recognize this need and want to give back by providing free winter coats for families.
“Because that’s my son’s idea, ”said the proud dad.
“Good job boy, but get them some coats!” “
The family business collects donations for its first annual coat drive.
Donors can drop off new winter coats and clothing until Sunday before this weekend’s big giveaway.

“Come get some food, come get some coats for your kids, ”said the Jr. and co-owner.
“Come get a coat and have a good time and just see that we are trying to restore the community in a different way.”
The Hood family say it’s not uncommon to see neighbors enduring the harsh cold with few to no envelopes, and they want to keep as many people warm as possible.
“I mean, it gives me chills, ”said Hood Sr.
“I mean you’re here in this cold like that, I mean it’s not good.” So anything I can do to help someone. I mean, that’s what we’re here for.
The coat collection takes place on Sunday November 28e 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hood’s Tires.
The address is 10401 Mack Avenue.
