Detention center hosts free Back 2 School extravaganza for Richland 1 students

Richland County, SC (WOLO) – Students in Richland School District 1 can prepare for the start of the school year.

According to Richland County officials, Richland County is looking to ease expenses for families while boosting student morale.

The Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is accepting school supply donations through Saturday, August 6 at 201 John Mark Dial Drive, Columbia. These supplies will be distributed at the free Back 2 School Extravaganza show from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, August 12, also at the detention center.

“The Alvin S. Glenn Correctional Center wants to be involved in the community and in the lives of the people we serve,” said Tyrell Cato, director of the center. Cato said there are plans to make the event an annual tradition.

Items collected for collecting supplies include pencils, crayons, sharpeners, pens, markers, highlighters, paper, composition books, glue, tape, crayons, binders, folders, backpacks, erasers, notebooks, dividers and toiletries.

The Extravaganza is open to Richland County School District 1 students and their families. Backpacks and other school supplies will be provided to students on a first-come, first-served basis, and curbside pickup will be available. Attendees can register online ahead of the event:
