BSMG Hosting Back to Basics Series | Living

The Big Spring Master Gardeners continue to host a monthly series of 10-part “Back to Basics” demonstrations, workshops and presentations from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Northeast Research and Education Center. Tennessee at 2255 E. Allens Bridge Road. These sessions are free and open to the public.

The first course, titled “Soil Basics,” took place on February 24 and was attended by over 35 participants. The next presentation entitled “Planting Tips” will take place on Thursday. Different topics will be discussed, such as:

  • Legacy and Hybrids
  • Determined versus Indeterminate
  • What are cultivars?
  • Home garden vegetable trials
  • All US selections
  • Seeds against grafts
  • Cold season versus hot season

All participants will have a chance to win one of the door prizes.

For those who prefer online workshops, BSMGA also offers Monday Musings. These are offered quarterly and cover a variety of topics. The first reflection titled “Get GROWing in 2022” will be hosted by Melody Rose via Zoom on March 21. This session is free and will provide a refresher on planting tips, new fruits, heirloom vegetables, summer covers, and pest identification and control options (including organic). It will also explore herbs to incorporate into garden plantings (medicinal and edible) and a local tradition.
