Bangor City Center Businesses Organize Plaid Friday Sales

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – This is the most wonderful time of the year – for businesses in downtown Bangor.

This Friday, local stores – like Rebecca’s gift shop – are celebrating “Plaid Friday,” a national initiative that encourages local shopping on the most important day of the holiday sale, Black Friday.

More than a dozen Bangor businesses are getting into the holiday spirit this Checkered Friday, which they hope to carry over to Small Business Saturday.

Store owners and managers say, why bother getting up early to wait in a crowded mall when you can get services and save money downtown?

“Downtowns were like, ‘Hey, you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night! ”Said Betsy Lundy, executive director of the Downtown Bangor Partnership. “You can come downtown, have a cup of coffee, take a leisurely stroll and just see all your friends and neighbors and visit your local stores.”

“My wife and I spend a lot of time shopping for unique things that other stores don’t have,” said Rick Vigue, owner of Rebecca Gift Shop. “Lots of food, lots of Maine items, lovely Christmas decorations, and lots of really unique gifts that you can’t find anywhere else. I think that’s why people love to shop here.

There is free parking at the PIckering Square garage from 7 a.m.

You can find a full list of participating companies at Bangor City Center Facebook Page.
